Dancing with Elves

From £1745 per person

DAY 1: Leave for Lapland

Fly from London Heathrow to Kittila (via Helsinki). On arrival, you will be met by your local guide to transfer by coach to Harriniva, less than an hour away. Children receive a small welcome pack and the adults an update on the programme. Check-in and head straight to your room, where your thermal clothing will be ready. Dinner this evening is served in the atmospheric setting of the Aurora Borealis Kota.
DAY 2: Reindeer encounter, Snow Fun & Father Christmas
Enjoy a full breakfast buffet before taking your first steps into the Arctic Wilderness. This morning meet some of Father Christmas's reindeer. A herder welcomes you to his traditional kota, where a Shaman arrives to tell a tale from ancient folklore and performs a time-honoured ‘Crossing the Arctic Circle’ ceremony. This is followed by a short ride in a traditional reindeer sleigh. Learn how the Sami lasso their herd and perhaps feed the reindeer some of their favourite food. You will later be awarded a reindeer driving licence to mark the event.
After lunch, it’s an afternoon of snow fun. Begin by trying cross-country skiing and testing balancing skills whilst snow shoeing. There are mini snowmobiles for the children to try, and the toboggans and kick-sleds runs are enjoyed by people of all ages. Test your skills with a competitive ice-hockey game.
Later, each family will take a memorable journey out into the forest. Here you will meet the Lady of the Woods who, along with her elves, directs you along a trail marked by lanterns, to a giant log cabin where Santa lives. The rest is a secret until you meet him. Whilst waiting for your sleigh to arrive, help to decorate a Christmas tree, bake traditional gingerbread cookies, make a gingerbread house and craft some Christmas decorations.
Tonight dinner will be served in the main restaurant.
DAY 3: Snowmobile & Huskies
After breakfast today, the whole family will enjoy a thrilling snowmobile ride into the Arctic fells and forest. Adults drive in pairs whilst the children are wrapped up under reindeer skin rugs on a special sleigh behind the guide. Break half-way to play in waist-deep snow before returning to the lodge for lunch.
This afternoon you will meet the excited Harriniva huskies. This 400-strong family each has their own name and is eager to start the afternoon run. Grown-ups mush 2 per dog team, whilst children ride in sleds behind the guide. The only sounds that break the snowy silence are the panting of the dogs and enthusiastic calls of the musher. On returning to the kennels, meet some of the dogs (and perhaps their puppies) and the children get the chance to mush their own sled too. We then head to a cosy Kota for more treats. Enjoy marshmallow toasting over the open fire and, warm drinks with cake whilst preparing Christmas wishes and making little wooden elves.
This evening, after having tucked into a festive Finnish Christmas buffet, you may hear the sound of bells jingling through the trees and discover an ancient Sami spirit has told Santa where you are. He appears to deliver a small present to children and grown-ups alike.
DAY 4: Return to the UK
After breakfast, if there's time, enjoy a quick last toboggan or snowball fight before transferring to the airport for your return flight home.
Temperatures can vary at this time between 0°c and -30°c. as such local conditions can mean that the itinerary, location, duration and order of excursions may change. Any decision to do this is to ensure your comfort, enjoyment and safety in the resort.
