22nd DEC 2018: Fly to Lapland
Fly from London Heathrow to Kittila (via Helsinki). On arrival, you will be met by your local guide and transfer by coach to Harriniva, under an hour away. Children receive a small welcome pack and the adults an update on the programme. Check-in and head straight for your room, where your thermal clothing will be ready. A welcome drink is served with dinner in the main restaurant.
23rd DEC 2018: Husky Safari & Treasure Hunt & Marshmallow Toasting
This morning it is time to meet the Harriniva huskies, a 400-strong family, each with their own name tag. You may even get to meet some of the newborn puppies. All bark excitedly, eager to start their run through the forest paths. Grown-ups mush 2 per dog team whilst children ride in husky sleds behind the Lapp guide. Once on your way, the only sounds that punctuate the snowy silence are the panting of the dogs and the enthusiastic calls of the musher. When the children return, they get the chance to mush their own huskies too. Lunch will be served back at the lodge.
Gather for a Christmas treasure hunt, before heading to a traditional Kota where everyone writes a Christmas wish and can make their own souvenir ‘Tonttu’ (that’s Finnish for elf), whilst toasting marshmallows over an open fire. A buffet dinner is served in the main restaurant, leaving plenty of time to continue playing in the snow, enjoy the hot tubs* or go in search of the aurora borealis.
24th DEC 2018: Snow Fun, Cookie Baking and an audience with Father Christmas.
After breakfast, today it is time to try your hand at cross-country skiing or snow shoeing. There is also the thrill of a toboggan ride and kick-sledding, you could even challenge each other to an ice hockey game. Children can try the mini-skidoos. Just watch out for a possible stray snowball! Lunch is served in the restaurant.
This afternoon each family takes a memorable journey out into the forest and along a secret trail marked by lanterns hanging in the trees. In the heart of the forest you discover the Lady of the Woods, sheltering in her teepee with some of Santa’s Elves. They greet and guide you to a giant log cabin where Santa lives - the rest is a secret until you meet him. Whilst waiting for your sleigh to arrive you help to decorate a Christmas tree, bake traditional gingerbread cookies, make a gingerbread house and enjoy some traditional Christmas crafts.
Later that evening you will enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner served in the Aurora Borealis kota. During the evening you should hear the distant sound of sleigh bells followed by a knock on the door – an ancient Sami spirit has told Santa where you are! Led by a herder in traditional Sami costume, Santa will make your earlier wishes come true and delivers a small present to everyone, grown-ups and children alike.
25th DEC 2018: Snowmobile Safari and Ice-Fishing
Harriniva is at the edge of a dense forest and after breakfast you take to your snowmobile for an exciting journey through the frozen landscape. Adults drive in pairs while children are wrapped up under reindeer skin rugs on a special sleigh behind the guide. Follow the snowy trail through the winter landscape before stopping half way where everybody will have the chance to get out and play in the deep snow.
Warm up with lunch back at the lodge, after which you will try your hand at ice-fishing (weather permitting) on the frozen river located next to Harriniva. Afternoon snacks and pastries are on hand back in the restaurant, before Christmas dinner in the main restaurant.
26th DEC 2018: Torassieppi Reindeer Farm & Jeris Spa
After breakfast you will head off by coach on the short trip to Torassieppi reindeer farm, the origins of which date back to 1847. Here you will learn about the Sami reindeer herders, visit the old house and museum, master the art of lasso throwing and feed the reindeer. You will also be taken on a short 1.5 km reindeer drive. An ancient mystical Shamen will appear and tell a story of ancient folklore and he also performs a 'Crossing the Arctic Circle' ceremony. You will later be awarded a diploma and licence to mark your achievements.
Lunch will be served in the Ice Restaurant before you head to Jeris Spa a perfect way to relax after the morning activities. The spa has two heated pools as well as an electric Sauna and a real Lappish wood heated smoke sauna. For those who are more adventurous there is also a 25-metre illuminated ice pool. Hot drinks and pastries will be served at Jeris before a return coach transfer back to Harriniva and dinner in the main restaurant.
