Whilst Petra is indeed one of the most stunning attractions not only in the Middle East but throughout the world, Jordan as a destination offers so much more. A well travelled bridge between sea and desert, east and west, Jordan is a must on most travel itineraries from cultural tours to religious studies, from art to adventure. As well as one of the "New 7 Wonders of the World" at Petra, you can visit the World Heritage Site of Wadi Rum (made famous by the film Lawrence of Arabia.)
You can bathe in the restful waters of the Dead Sea, visit Jerash to see one of the biggest standing Roman sites in the world, or marvel at the spectacular mosaics in Madaba. You will be pleasantly surprised by what you will find. There are times when visiting places you've long dreamed about, there is a slight sense of disappointment when you are actually there. But not when you are suddenly embraced by the stunning Treasury of Petra standing in front of you, almost unexpectedly after a long walk through narrow colourful canyons. Representing thousands of years of history, the breathtaking facade blows you away, almost stopping time. Indeed, the whole valley is a true step into the past. As the 19th century scholar John William Burgon immortally and accurately described it, Petra is 'A rose red city, half as old as time' although he never actually saw it. For adventure seekers there are horse back and camel rides in the desert or a 4X4 desert safari experience, rock climbing, canyoning and walking/trekking.
For those seeking relaxation, nothing can compare with floating on the salty waters of the Dead Sea or watching the stunning sunset from your hotel balcony, constantly changing colours over these alluring waters. You suddenly realise that you are actually at the lowest point on earth, some 1300 feet below sea level, looking across the sea and mountains beyond. It blows your mind away as it all feels very strange yet very mystical. Jordan is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, making for pleasurable year-round travel. Amman is generally warm and sunny from May to October, with average temperatures around 26°C (80°F) and very low humidity. Because of the city's elevation, evenings are cooler and the city enjoys an outdoor dining/café culture. The temperatures can vary considerably from one end of Jordan to the other, especially in winter.
Whilst it is cold in Amman in December, you can be sunbathing in Aqaba only a few hours' drive away from the Jordan capital. It is true to say that one can experience all four seasons in a Jordan tour in 7 nights. The Dead Sea has the perfect temperatures from September to May for people looking for a winter sun location for a few days or a week long relaxation.
